Pangasinan is among the earliest political and administrative units in the Philippines. It has over 400 years of history and culture that started with the colonization by the Spaniards headed by Martin de Goiti, to its establishment as an encomienda under the Spanish Crown and eventually as a provincial unit, to its Golden Age brought about by developments under the present government.

Pangasinan is a crescent-shaped province, the third largest in the country and constitutes almost one-half of the total land area of Region 1. Pangasinan derived its name from the word "asin" or salt because of the many salt beds situated along the coastal part of the province. Hence when translated, pangASINan literally mean "where the salt is made".
