IV: New Wonder of Nature!





The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is one of Philippines natural treasures located in the province of Palawan. It is a UNESCO heritage site and recently proclaimed as official
New Wonder of Nature. It boasts of the longest navigable underground river, about 8.2 kilometers, that winds through a spectacular cave system that empties to the South China Sea. The mineral formations found in the caves include amazing formations of stalagmites and stalactites that resembles different strange objects and famous people . At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon with can be seen framed by ancient trees over limestone rocks.

Activities when visiting the river system:

  • Paddle boating - boats are used when navigating inside the river-cave system. the boats are equipped with spotlights and the trip through the river can take up to an hour. Another boat tour is offered that allows visitors to experience the mangrove growing within the river without any human intervention and contribute to the cause of populating the river with more mangrove saplings for the future of the river ecosystem. 
  • Wildlife watching - different animals find their niche around the cave/river system. Animals such as monkeys, monitor lizards and other endemic species could be seen near the cave. Another fun activity is bird watching where endemic species of parrots and herons can be seen around the cave.
  • Trekking/hiking - for nature lovers who wants to explore the vegetation around the cave. A monkey trail can be undertaken that takes you to an alternative route to the cave system. Animals such us peacocks, monkeys, lizards and other endemic species can be seen throughout the trail. 
  • Caving - other cave systems around the site can be seen and explored. Ugong Cave and Lions cave to name a few.
  • Enjoying the beach - Palawan also boasts of beautiful pristine white sand beaches comparable to the world's best! Visitors can swim in the pristine beaches or just soaked up in the sun by the shore. 
Things to remember when visiting the site:
  • Special permit - a Permit must be obtained from the Tourism information office in Sabang, a 2-hour road ride from the capital Puerto Princesa  or can be arranged in Puerto Princesa City itself. 
  • Don't forget to stop by the Puerto Princesa National Park office for some guidelines
  • Bring extra clothing. The temperature inside the cave tends to be lower than outside temperature.
  • Bring extra lighting to best appreciate the beauty inside the cave
